It’s Never Too Late for Horses:
(Quick headline: A look at the challenges and fun of being part of the horse world when you are ‘of a certain age.”)
The fastest growing segment of the recreational horse world is women over 60. Many women have been around horses all of their lives while others are either coming back after yes away due to schools, careers, families, and other obligations. Then there is the huge number of women getting to horses for the first time. They are usually *finally* living their dream.
No matter the situation, the horse world for ‘women of a certain age’ poses challenges that the rest of the population does not face. The obvious ones are physical – from replacement parts to aching joints to uniquely female issues. But there are other matters – how we think, how we learn, finances, and dealing with partners and families who don’t share our enthusiasm.
It’s OK Not to Ride Your Horse
(Quick Headline: The possibilities and pleasures of the equine world without being in the saddle.)
While riding is the focus for most horse people, there are many other ways to enjoy the equine world. Hanging out together and taking trail ‘walks,’ participating in equine agility and ‘liberty’ groundwork, helping at rescues and therapeutic programs, and creating Pasture Paradise farms are ways to show that it’s OK not to ride your horse.
The Care and Feeding of Riders of a Certain Age
(Quick Headline: An interactive session that explains the changes as we become that “certain age.”
Our bodies go through major changes at 40 and 60. First it’s muscle. Then it’s bones. We need to adapt our lifestyles to deal with that. Nutritional and exercise needs are essential to that. Balance is also critical as we age, so be prepared to learn exercises to evaluate and improve that skill.

2024 OVCTA Volunteer of The Year
Helen Thompson

Helen Thompson and her Reinert (Riley) competing at the National Dressage Pony Cup held at WEC in Ohio in July 2024.
I am truly honored to receive the OVCTA Volunteer of the Year award. Volunteering allows me to contribute to a group that fosters learning and camaraderie among riders of all ages. Supporting the participants in the many events OVCTA offers, from horse shows to clinics, has been a rewarding experience.
One of my favorite events was serving as a ring steward at the Spring Hunter Show – who can resist kids and their ponies? Watching those young riders navigate the classes with such determination and joy made the experience even more special.
Another highlight of volunteering has been connecting with fellow volunteers and learning about their journeys with horses. Their dedication and stories were an inspiration, reinforcing how fortunate I am to be part of such a supportive community.
I look forward to continuing as a member of the OVCTA, contributing to our sport and helping to create memorable experiences for riders and horses. Thank you for this incredible recognition!

OVCTA is a fun and friendly riding club located mainly in Chester, Berks, and Montgomery Counties. The club offers year end awards, a USEF/USDF recognized dressage show, educational seminars, mounted and un-mounted clinics and other activities in the areas of dressage, eventing, hunter/jumpers, horsemanship and general horse care. OVCTA is also happy to offer social events where members and their friends and family can gather informally for food and fun.

If you like to show, OVCTA offers the easiest way to earn points for our many year-end awards. We accept points from any show with any level USDF/USEF approved judge and any USDF/USEA test. It is that simple.
If you do not like to show, we offer educational seminars and clinics throughout the year. We are responsive to the interests of our members and bring in the speakers and clinicians you want to see.
Our Mission Statement: The purpose of the Oley Valley Combined Training Association shall be to inform and educate its members and the general public on horsemanship and horse care, and to promote the equestrian disciplines of Combined Training and Dressage.
